Abstract
Sustainability now becomes a popular issue. However, the term is still in polemic and often misleads. People and businesses usually confused about the difference between sustainable tourism and environmentally responsible tourism. Sustainable development should address the global context of economic, environmental and sociological. Unfortunately, little evidence proofs how effective this concept is in practice since there are limited standards that should not be overrides. Carrying Capacity, despite its limitation should be considered as a planning tool. Collaborative and careful planning that embrace holistic perspectives within longterm development are believed able to minimise and/or avoid negative tourism impacts while enhancing its advantages. To bring about those standpoints, environmental aspects should be given high consideration. Necessary legislations and regulations are required to enforcing the implementation of environmental management system, environmental impact assessment and environmental auditing as a sequence steps instead of conflicting matters. Tourism Certification Programme is a relatively new movement claim to help businesses to implement sustainable programmes and display their credentials to the consumer. Companies show such commitment to the environment attracts new market segments, reduced costs and builds company, community and investor confidence. However not all initiatives are as effective as they claim to be. To gain from these conditions, market should be more aware about the value behind every initiative. This study aimed to identify the importance of tourism certification and its . implementation with respect to the community of Bournemouth. Research has been carried out to build up information, knowledge and understanding about tourism certification and its application to the travel and tourism industry; and to identify the benefits and impacts of the approach; as well as to evaluate Bournemouth's environmental programme with respect to certification. Main findings will be used to identify areas of further improvement in order to enhance the sustainability of the tourism product in Bournemouth. This study, therefore, correspond to previous experience of tourism and environmental management in Bournemouth and elsewhere .
